Hospitality Management + Co-op

    PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

    This program has been reviewed and approved by The Private Training Institutions Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training BC, Canada

    This diploma program focuses on preparing you to work in the hospitality industry. It will give you a solid theoretical and practical foundation, in the application of current industry tools, procedures and practices, including basic industry accounting, managing food and beverage services, and front office and house keeping operations. You will be able to apply skills in a co-op work experience setting.

    CO-OP

    The paid Co-op work experience placement is an integral component of the Hospitality Management with Co-op Diploma program that will provide students with real-world experience in a Canadian business environment.

    OVERVIEW

    Program Length

    • Total 76 weeks – 1520 Hours * (including the Coop work experience)

      • Total 38 weeks – 760 hours

        • Blended Delivery: the program delivery is a combination of on-site and distance delivery.

    Credential Upon Graduation

        • Hospitality Management Diploma

    Admission Requirements

        • High school graduate or equivalent or
        • Mature student status ( British Columbia 19 years old and plus)
        • Meet the College’s English Proficiency requirements by any one of the following options:
          • IELTS: 5.5 (or better) or
          • TOEFL (paper): 520 (or better) or
          • TOEFL (CBT): 190 (or etter) or
          • TOEFL (IBT): 70 (or better) or
          • Cambridge: FCE (or better) or
          • Intermediate (or better) Certificate from a Language Canada-accredited school
          • Pearson English Placement Test at the Intermediate level
          • Pass the College’s English Language Proficiency exam
          • Has earned a high school graduation diploma from a Canadian high school or earned a diploma from secondary school (or above) in a system in which English is the official language

    Note: Program graduates who have successfully completed AHLEI exams will be eligible to receive an AHLEI “Hospitality Management” diploma

    Course Description

    • A comprehensive introduction to all facets of the hospitality industry.
    • A historical perspective of the hospitality industry and explores all aspects of hotel operations. It addresses the increasing role of internet technology on hospitality operations, especially its role in creating and sustaining positive customer relations.

    HOSP250 Supervision in the Hospitality Industry

    Course Description

    • Best practices in employee management, including on-boarding, training, motivation, and effective conflict management.
    • The potential positive and negative effects of social media is explored as well as the role of variety of emerging technologies in managing day to day operations.

    HOSP261 Hotel & Restaurant Accounting

    Course Description

    • Cloud-based technologies are driving how and where financial information is collected, analyzed and delivered.
    • Introduce the tools, techniques, and practices being used to provide hospitality managers instantaneous feedback on the financial status of their operation allowing them to make timely responsive cost saving product enhancing decisions.

    HOSP281 Hospitality Facilities Management & Design

    Course Description

    • Students will know how to manage and provide maintenance oversight of the physical plant and facilities of a hotel or restaurant and will learn to work effectively with engineering and maintenance department.

    HOSP304 Leadership & Management in Hospitality Industry

    Course Description

    • Students will improve their leadership abilities and develop an understanding of how to manage effectively in a team-based collaborative environment to improve guest service and profitability.

    HOSP333 Managing Front Office Operations

    Course Description

    • A systematic approach to front office procedures by detailing the flow of business through a hotel, from the reservations processes to check-out and account settlement.
    • Examine the various elements of effective front office management, paying attention to the planning and evaluation of front office operations and to human resources management.

    HOSP338 Managing House Keeping Operations

    Course Description

    • In a budget and environmentally conscious customer and social media driven environment house keeping practices right across the operational spectrum are critical to the success of any hospitality operation.
    • Introduces students to 21st century principles of house keeping management.

    HOSP349 Managing Service in Food & Beverage Operations

    Course Description

    • Provides students with practical skills and knowledge of effective management of food and beverage operations.
    • Basic service principles are presented while emphasizing the importance of exceeding the expectations of guests.

    HOSP357 Managing Hospitality Human Resources

    Course Description

    • A systematic approach to human resources management.
    • Contemporary issues and practices will be analyzed, as well as employment laws that impact on the way people are managed.

    HOSP387 Security & Loss Prevention Management

    Course Description

    • Students will learn the issues surrounding the need for individualized hotel security programs by examining the policies and procedures and technologies required to ensure guest safety and asset protection.
    • Topics will also explore risk assessment and management, loss prevention, occupational health, and safety regulations.

    HOSP468 Managing Technology in Hospitality Industry

    Course Description

    • Comprehensive overview of the information needs of lodging properties and food establishments including point sale, property management, accounting, and security applications and systems.
    • The role of virtual private networks and managing social media will also be explored.

    HOSP472 Hospitality Sales and Marketing

    Course Description

    • Designed to provide students with a solid foundation in hospitality sales and marketing focusing on practical sales techniques for selling to a wide variety of targeted markets.

    CARE100 Career Planning

    Course Description

    • Focus in equal measure, on providing students with the tools and techniques to develop, enhance, and maintain a positive goal oriented portfolio of professional career information using available technologies, while also focusing on how to effectively manage our online electronic selves and communication to promote skills sets and create employment opportunities.

    EXPE100 Work Experience

    Course Description

    • This co-op work experience allows students to demonstrate and apply acquired knowledge, technical, and practical skills in a real-world work environment while providing them with opportunities to experience personal and professional growth.
